The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria.
Fernando Arrabal, March 24 - April 29 2006
"Help me, sir! I am the only survivor of the accident."

"Fee! Fee! Feegaa! Feeeegaa!"

And so begins Fernando Arrabal's The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria, a show marking the thirty-fifth production at the Zeitgeist, which first opened in the spring of 1997, and the return of live theater to this award winning venue after a hiatus of almost two years (see a clip from the production here!)

The story of two men, one of whom is now stranded on a desert island, the Architect and the Emperor, and the effects of power and longing on simple human relationships. As the Emperor teaches him about the wonders of modern living ("Ignorant brute....Have I regaled you with my stories about television, Coca-Cola, tanks, the museums of Babylon, our ministers, our popes...?"), the Architect slowly finds himself transformed into a mimic of all that he has never had or even imagined.

Zeitgeist's production features two of Detroit's great young actors, Charles Reynolds (co-founder of the Abreact Playhouse, and star of their critically acclaimed production of The Metamorphosis last spring) and Joel Mitchell (who starred in the Breathe Art Theater's production of "Dead Eye Boy" this past fall at 1515 Broadway). Both actors have performed at the Zeitgeist on numerous occasions, including together in The Ubu Variations (February 2003). John Jakary (Director) again collaborates with Troy Richard (Designer) to create an intimate and vicious portrait of a desperate tyrant, and the effects of power run amok.

3 Twenty Minute Plays (With Drinking In Between) 2: Another Experiment In Drama. Troy Richard, February 20 - March 13 2004. Troy Richard, Director.
“With the right cooperation, we should prevail.” –The Dictator
ZeitGeist Detroit presents another world premiere this season, with this original series of scripts by Troy Richard. In "The Girl with the Cut Off Foot" (Kelli Rossi as The Girl, Michael McGettigan as her Husband, and Dax Anderson as The Zealot), Mr. Richard pits the damnation of a wrathful god against the naïve and trusting belief of a woman who sacrifices her foot to save her children from hell. "The Dictator Makes A Move" (Alan Madlane as The Dictator and Charles Reynolds as The Zealot) pushes the boundaries of humor and good taste as a Dictator plays cat and mouse with the last man of dead race. And in "Bone-draggin’ Grizzly Bear" (James Mio as The Grizzley Bear), the audience becomes a bar patron invited into the surreal world of the bone-dragging grizzly bear who’s just waitin’ for the muse to come around again on the g’itar.
